Understanding and Maximizing Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) for Research Visibility and Impact in Health Sciences
Authors/Creators
Description
This presentation by Dr Amy Pascalia Abra Asimah of the Regional Maritime University/LIBSENSE Ghana explained Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) and their importance in improving research visibility, attribution, discoverability, and impact. It covered three main categories: researcher identifiers such as ORCID, Scopus Author ID, and Web of Science ResearcherID; research-output identifiers such as DOI; and organisational identifiers such as ROR.
A major focus was ORCID, a persistent identifier that remains with researchers even when their name, career, location, or discipline changes. The presentation emphasised linking ORCID to Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and other research profiles to improve attribution accuracy, reduce duplication, save time in publishing and funding workflows, and increase research visibility and impact. Researchers were also encouraged to maintain their profiles, add publications using reliable identifiers such as DOIs, correct duplicate records, and use citation metrics responsibly alongside other measures of research quality and impact.
